  • Long Term Primitive Survival, As A Group

    Zaskoda
    18 Nov 2009 | 7:10 pm
Maybe it happened when I watched Rambo as a kid. Maybe it was Damnation Alley. It could have even been good old Mad Max. I’m not really sure, but somewhere along the way, I got very interested in the whole idea of survival. I was even more encouraged when my uncle Bobby gave me a survival knife for Christmas one year. I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8. Strangely enough, I didn’t start going on real backpacking trips until recently in life. While I’ve done a bit of camping, I never went so far as to carry everything I would need for several days attached one way or…
  • Polar Bear Update – Oil Pressure and Exhaust

    Zaskoda
    17 Nov 2009 | 8:43 pm
The attached image is a photoshop Nino did that includes a lot of the cosmetic changes I want to make to Polar Bear. The cargo box and solar panel were not in my plans, but Nino just happened to find that particular Sportsmobile Penthouse pop-top at the right angle to do the photoshop. Polar Bear turned out to be more of a … bear … than I originally expected. Nino and I have been tracking a spreadsheet of changes, both planned and completed. It’s not balancing out like I had hoped. Right away, I spent $60 to get the oil pressure sender replaced. I now have an oil pressure…
  • First Backcountry Report

    12 Nov 2009 | 10:57 pm
Last week, Nino, 3 skiers, and I headed up just northwest of Black Hawk city for what would be my first (and Nino’s) backcountry trip. I had some of the gear I needed, but still dropped nearly $700 for 2 beacons, another set of snowshoes, 2 shovels, and 2 probes. Nino and I also attended a 1 hour avalanche awareness course. We learned enough to know we need to take a real class. The snow conditions were nearly as bad as you could imagine. Several days of sun had the top cursted over in the open areas. I would find myself over knee deep in snow not 20 meters from a patch of exposed…
  • Introducing Polar Bear

    Zaskoda
    28 Oct 2009 | 6:24 pm
On October 24th, I purchased a van from a fella in South Lake Tahoe. Nino and I named her “Polar Bear”. The idea is to turn this van into a camper. To be honest, I’m not 100% confident that this is the van I want to build from. I want to have a mechanic look her over and get a better idea of what I’m working with. Here’s what I know so far: The Van 1987 Ford e250 3rd generation Econoline van, regular body 33″ x 12.5″ inch tires, 8 lug 16″ rims What looks like a 6 to 8 inch suspension lift (maybe more?) Ford 4th generation 300cu Straight 6 EFI…

Since 2004, I’ve maintained a snowboarding blog at my old Shobek domain. Last night I moved all of those hundreds of posts to this blog and replaced the old site with a redirect. I also once maintained a blog on building virtual communities on blogger. I imported those posts as well. Unfortunately, blogger doesn’t allow an easy method to redirect traffic. Eventually, I’ll pull that blog down entirely I think. Left lingering are blog posts on MySpace, Intent.com, WebcraftStudios.com, and probably a couple of more places I can’t think of at the moment. I will be pulling…

While I had nothing worthy of a specific post here’s a few nuggets from recently articles, press releases and other stuff that has come our way. Beer, gear and backcountry cheer: Pyramid Breweries are giving away a free trip to Squaw Valley for a winner and three friends. Contest does not appear open to Canucks. Details are here. Whistler opened yesterday. Sounds like Village Gondola, red chair, green chair, Franz’s chair were all open. Check out this video for an idea of what conditions are like. How is social media changing how ski resorts interact with customers? Boston.com had…
  • The Knee Brace is Gone

    Adam
    12 Nov 2009 | 5:22 pm
Back in August I was wondering if it was finally time to ditch my knee brace (you can read the post here; it links to an interesting article on ACL surgery recovery). I’m now pleased to report the brace is (hopefully) gone forever! I ditched it during the current ultimate frisbee season, and frankly I’m not interested in going back. I’ve also ditched it for ice hockey, and am planning not to wear it riding as well. I felt it was time to lose the brace before it became a crutch. It’s been more than two years since my surgery, so I think the time was right; it provided…
  • New Whistler Lift

I was very excited when I initially heard rumblings out west that a new chairlift had been built on the Creekside part of Whistler Mountain. Unfortunately, the new lift is a temporary one for pedestrians to easily get between different parts of the Dave Murray Downhill. • When Work and Snowboarding Intersect

    Adam
    11 Nov 2009 | 5:12 am
It’s not often, particularly in my line of work, that I get to connect snowboarding and my job. However, a recent development in the industry I work in now gives me that chance – for one blog post, at least! If you follow Internet governance issues at all (I know, it doesn’t sound horribly exciting) you’re likely aware that there’s a movement afoot to get a slew of new Top Level Domains (TLDs) introduced. A TLD is a domain name “extension” like .COM, .NET or .ORG. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which governs how and…
  • Life… It’s Just Not Fair

    10 Nov 2009 | 4:39 pm
Excerpt of an email I just got from Whistler Blackcomb: “The words ‘opening day’ and ‘early,’ much like peanut butter and jelly, always go together so well, which is why Whistler Blackcomb is very pleased to announce that Whistler Mountain is opening its doors early, this Saturday, November 14, with Blackcomb Mountain following in its footsteps on Thursday, November 26. Mother Nature has certainly been kind to us with an estimated 70-100 cm (28-39 inches) of snow accumulated over the past seven days. And, with the cold front moving across the south Coastal…
